Passport Renewal: How to Renew a US Passport Online, by Mail or in Person

Man renewing his US passport online at home with his old passport and laptop

You can renew a US passport online, by mail or in person, and the right route depends on your age, the condition of your passport and your travel date. Most adults whose passport was issued in the last 15 years renew by mail with Form DS-82, and eligible adults can now skip the paper and renew online.

Passport renewal looks simple until a small detail sends the application back. A photo with glare, a check made out to the wrong name or a trip booked five weeks away can cost you months. This guide shows which route you qualify for, what each route costs, how long it takes once mailing time is counted, and the mistakes that delay applications. Fees were checked against the State Department fee page (last updated March 19, 2026) and processing times against its processing page (updated October 5, 2026). If you also need a visa, our visa processing time calculator helps you plan around both.

Who Can Renew a US Passport?

An adult can renew a US passport by mail if the passport was issued when you were 16 or older, within the last 15 years, and was valid for 10 years. Adult passports are valid for 10 years. Children’s passports are valid for 5 years and can’t be renewed, so applicants under 16 start with a new application.

Beyond age and date, the State Department sets four conditions for mail renewal:

  • The passport is undamaged beyond normal wear.
  • The passport has never been reported lost or stolen.
  • The passport is in your current name, or you can document a name change with a certified legal record such as a marriage certificate or court order.
  • You can send your most recent passport book, card or both with the application.

If any condition fails, you apply in person with Form DS-11 instead. A passport that was issued 16 years ago, for example, falls outside the 15-year window even if it looks perfect.

Should You Renew Online, by Mail or in Person?

Renew online if you qualify, by mail if you don’t, and in person only when neither works. The table compares the three routes.

RouteWho qualifiesExpedite availableForm
OnlineAge 25 or older, 10-year passport expiring within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, no name changeNoOnline application
By mailPassport issued within 15 years at age 16 or older, undamaged, in your current nameYes, $60DS-82
In personDamaged, lost or stolen passport, or any case that fails mail rulesYes, $60DS-11

The online route is the fastest to start and the only one with email updates at each stage. It has the most conditions, though. Several of them trip people up at the last step, which is why the next section lists every one.

How Do You Renew a Passport Online?

You can renew online at opr.travel.state.gov, the only official site for online passport renewal, if you meet every condition and aren’t in a hurry. The service is for routine processing only.

Check these conditions before you start:

  1. Your passport was valid for 10 years and expires within 1 year, or expired less than 5 years ago.
  2. You are 25 or older.
  3. You aren’t changing your name or sex.
  4. You aren’t traveling for at least 6 weeks from the day you submit.
  5. You are in a US state or territory when you apply.
  6. Your passport isn’t damaged and was never reported lost or stolen.

You also complete the application yourself, because third parties can’t file it for you. Have these ready: the passport you’re renewing, a credit or debit card, a digital passport photo, your Social Security number and an emergency contact.

Document combinations matter. Book to book, card to card, and book and card to book and card all work online, but a card-to-book or book-to-card change has to go by mail. If the State Department asks for more information, you have 90 days from the date on the letter or email to respond.

How Do You Renew a Passport by Mail?

Print Form DS-82 single-sided, sign and date it, and mail it with your old passport, one photo, payment and any name-change document. Mail renewal covers cases the online service doesn’t, including applicants under 25 and anyone who wants expedited service.

Your envelope needs these items:

  • Form DS-82, completed, signed and dated.
  • Your most recent passport book, card or both.
  • One passport photo, stapled with four staples at the corners.
  • A certified legal document if your name has changed.
  • A personal check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State, with your full name and date of birth written on the front.

Use the address printed in the form instructions, and don’t staple or tape anything else to the application. If your passport expired long ago or you changed your name within a year of issue, read the section on name changes below before you mail anything.

How Much Does Passport Renewal Cost?

A routine adult passport renewal costs $130 for a book, $30 for a card, or $160 for both. Optional services add to that price, and the total depends on how fast you need the passport.

  • Expedited service: $60 per application, with a target of 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Faster return shipping, 1 to 3 days after the passport is issued: $26.87.
  • In-person applications also carry a $35 acceptance fee paid to the facility.

Three examples show how the total adds up:

  • Routine book renewal by mail: $130.
  • Online book renewal with faster return shipping: $130 plus $26.87, which is $156.87.
  • Expedited book renewal with faster return shipping: $130 plus $60 plus $26.87, which is $216.87.

The shipping fee speeds up delivery after issue. It doesn’t speed up processing, so it helps most when your passport is already approved and sitting in the queue to be mailed. If you paid for expedited service and didn’t receive it, the State Department lets you request a refund of that fee. For comparison with other documents, the visa cost calculator adds up visa fees fee by fee.

How Long Does Passport Renewal Take?

Routine passport renewal takes 4 to 6 weeks and expedited renewal takes 2 to 3 weeks, and mailing time is not included in either figure. The State Department says so directly on its processing page.

Mailing adds real time. Your application can take up to 2 weeks to reach the State Department, and the finished passport can take another 2 weeks to reach you. Adding both to the routine window gives a worst case of 10 weeks. Adding both to the expedited window gives 7 weeks.

That arithmetic explains why a trip six weeks away is risky even with expedited service. If your departure is close, three habits help:

  • Choose expedited service and the 1 to 3 day return shipping together.
  • Mail the application by a tracked method so you know when it arrived.
  • Check your status online instead of waiting for the passport to appear.

Online renewals can’t be expedited, so anyone traveling within 6 weeks is routed to the mail route by design.

What Are the Passport Photo Rules?

Your photo must be in color, taken in the last 6 months, and printed at 2 by 2 inches (51 by 51 mm). Your head must measure between 1 and 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.

The background must be white or off-white, with no shadows, texture, objects or lines. Stand several feet from the wall, and you can drape a white sheet over a colored wall. Take off all eyewear, including sunglasses and tinted glasses, and don’t rest them on your head. If you can’t remove glasses for medical reasons, include a signed note from your doctor.

Photos can’t be edited. The State Department asks for the original, unedited photo without filters or digital changes, whether you apply online or on paper. For online renewal, you upload the digital photo with your application.

When Should You Renew Before Travel?

Renew at least 3 months before you travel, and earlier if your destination requires 6 months of passport validity. The State Department notes that some destinations, especially in Europe, require a passport valid for at least 6 more months after your travel dates.

Airlines may refuse boarding if you don’t meet that rule, so the expiry date on your passport isn’t the only date that matters. Check the entry rules for your destination when you start planning a trip, not the week before you leave. A passport that expires in 5 months can be a valid document at home and an unusable one at the gate.

The 3 months figure is a practical buffer. It covers the routine window of 4 to 6 weeks, up to 4 weeks of mailing and a few days for corrections. If the passport has already expired, the mail route works for a passport issued within the last 15 years, and the online route works if it expired less than 5 years ago.

How Do You Renew After a Name Change or Damage?

A name change within 1 year of your passport’s issue date uses Form DS-5504, and a change after 1 year uses Form DS-82 with a certified legal document. Neither change can go through online renewal, because that service can’t change your name or sex.

Your certified document can be a marriage certificate, a divorce decree or a court order. Send the original certified copy, not a photocopy, along with the application.

A damaged passport follows a different path. Normal wear is acceptable, but water damage, a torn page or a cut cover usually means you apply in person with Form DS-11 and pay the acceptance fee. A passport that was reported lost or stolen also sends you to the in-person route.

What Mistakes Delay Passport Renewal?

The most common mistakes are the wrong payee on the check, a photo that doesn’t meet the rules, a missing signature and sending the wrong document. Each one can return the application to you.

  • Payment: the check or money order must be payable to the U.S. Department of State, with your full name and date of birth on the front.
  • Photo: a photo older than 6 months, a shadow on the background or glasses in the picture.
  • Form: DS-82 printed on both sides instead of single-sided, or missing a signature or date.
  • Eligibility: using DS-82 when your passport is older than 15 years or was issued before age 16.
  • Name: a different name on the passport and the application with no certified document.
  • Timing: choosing online renewal when you travel within 6 weeks.

Read the checklist once before you seal the envelope or press submit. If you need more time to gather paperwork, our visa documents checklist tool shows how to organize an application file.Woman tracking her US passport renewal status online

How Do You Track a Passport Renewal?

The State Department emails status updates to the address on your application, and you can also check your status online. Online applicants get emails when the application is approved and when the passport is sent.

If more than 2 weeks have passed since your new passport was mailed, call 877-487-2778 (TTY 888-874-7793). Keep the confirmation email and a copy of your application until the passport arrives. Read the official guidance on the State Department’s passport renewal page before you submit.

Israel Passport Renewal

Renewal in Israel runs through the Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA). Most applicants renew in person at an authority office by advance appointment, and a narrow online route exists for some adults.

Steps:

  1. Book an appointment on the Govisit system for a biometric passport at a Population and Immigration Authority office.
  2. Fill in the passport application form and pay online through the government payment portal, or pay at the office during the visit.
  3. Attend the appointment with your identity card and current passport, and complete the photograph, fingerprint scan and identity questions at the counter.
  4. Receive the new passport by courier, confirm delivery by text message, and follow the activation instructions in the message.

Documents needed: Israeli identity card (Teudat Zehut); current or expired Israeli passport for cancellation and replacement; printed application form, completed before the appointment; payment confirmation from the online portal, or a credit card for office payment.

Fee: An adult renewal costs NIS 315 at an authority office, NIS 290 with online payment from March to October, and NIS 185 with online payment from November to February.

Processing time: Standard courier delivery takes 4 to 6 weeks after the office appointment. The online route takes 6 to 8 weeks, and consulates run about 4 to 6 weeks.

Where to apply: Population and Immigration Authority offices in Israel, by appointment. Adults aged 21 to 60 with fingerprints already on file can renew online through my.gov.il, and citizens abroad use an Israeli consulate.

Jordan Passport Renewal

The Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) renews an ordinary Jordanian passport through three routes: online, in person at a CSPD office, or through a Jordanian embassy or consulate abroad.

Steps:

  1. Register an account on the CSPD e-services portal or sign in to the Sanad application with an activated digital identity.
  2. Open Electronic Services, choose Passport Services, then select the Permanent Passport Renewal Service.
  3. Select the beneficiary from the designated beneficiary list and complete every mandatory field.
  4. Upload a recent personal photograph and the required attachments, such as the deferred military service book where it applies.
  5. Choose how the old passport reaches the department (a CSPD office, an approved delivery company, or the embassy) and choose the receipt point for the new passport.
  6. Pay the fee by eFAWATEERcom inside Jordan, or at the embassy for an application filed abroad.
  7. Submit the application and follow the text message and email notifications the system sends.

Documents needed: A recent personal photograph; the smart national identity card; the current passport, which is surrendered for cancellation before the new passport is issued; a deferred military service book for men aged 18 to 40, where it applies.

Fee: JD50 for a standard adult renewal (passport expired or holding under 180 days of validity). Holders renewing early with more than 180 days left, and applicants filing from outside Jordan, pay JD100. A child under 16 pays JD25.

Processing time: The CSPD sets a maximum delivery period of 72 hours for e-passport applications, counted from the application date. Consular files take longer, and the post advises starting an embassy renewal at least six weeks before a booked flight.

Where to apply: The CSPD e-services portal at eservice.cspd.gov.jo or the Sanad application; any CSPD office inside Jordan; a Jordanian embassy or consulate abroad.

  4. Give fingerprints and a digital signature, and have the photograph taken at the centre or hand over a printed photo.
  5. Pay the fee and note the expected delivery date given by the officer.

Documents needed: The most recent Danish passport, valid or expired; a passport photo that meets Danish National Police requirements, unless the photo is taken at the centre; a payment card for the fee; an original birth certificate for a first passport or a passport expired more than 2 years ago; a certificate of Danish nationality if one was ever issued; name change documentation if the name changed after the last passport was issued.

Where to apply: Any Borgerservice (citizen service centre) in Denmark, or a Danish embassy or consulate abroad.

Norway Passport Renewal

Norway runs no mail-in renewal service and no online renewal form. Every applicant books an appointment, attends in person, and hands in the old passport.

Steps:

  1. Check your National Population Register (Folkeregisteret) entry for the correct name and personal details, and report changes to the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) first.
  2. Book an appointment at a passport and ID office (pass- og ID-kontor) through politiet.no, choosing any police district in Norway.
  3. Gather the old passport, a national ID card or other approved photo identification, and parental consent documents for a child applicant.
  4. Attend the appointment in person, surrender the old passport, give fingerprints and a signature, sit for the office photo, and pay the fee.
  5. Receive the new passport by post at your registered address, or collect the passport at the office.

Documents needed: Your most recent Norwegian passport, valid or expired; a Norwegian national ID card, or other approved photo identification such as a Norwegian driving licence, if the old passport is missing; a signed consent form and identification from the other parent, for applicants under 18; a payment card or cash for the fee.

Fee: NOK 840 for an applicant aged 16 or over in Norway, and NOK 510 for a child under 16. Fees at embassies and consulates abroad are NOK 1,290 and NOK 770.

Processing time: The police estimate delivery at about 1 week after the appointment, plus postal time, for applications filed inside Norway. Embassy processing runs about 2 to 3 weeks in the United States, and smaller missions quote up to 2 months.

Where to apply: A passport and ID office of the police in Norway, by appointment booked on politiet.no; a Norwegian embassy or consulate abroad.

Colombia Passport Renewal

Passport renewal in Colombia means the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) issues a brand new electronic passport booklet. The application runs in person, because officials capture a fresh photograph, fingerprints and signature at every appointment.

Steps:

  1. Book a free appointment through the official Cancillería scheduling portal and select the office.
  2. Optionally complete the online registration form on the Cancillería procedures portal to enter personal data before the visit.
  3. Attend the appointment with the original citizenship card and the previous passport; an official verifies the documents against national records.
  4. Have your photograph, fingerprints and electronic signature captured on site.
  5. Pay the fee the same day, at a Banco GNB Sudameris branch inside the Bogotá offices, a Servibanca ATM, the PSE online payment system, or by Visa or Mastercard at the office.
  6. Collect the new passport in person with the valid citizenship card.

Documents needed: The original citizenship card (cédula de ciudadanía) in its current format; the previous passport, presented even after its expiry date; the certificate of pending issuance (contraseña) instead of the card, if the citizenship card is under replacement and the certificate is less than one year old. Applicants do not bring photographs, because the office captures the photograph on site.

Fee: COP 195,600 for the ordinary passport and COP 335,400 for the executive passport at the Bogotá offices in 2026. Consulates charge EUR 63 in Europe and Cuba, and USD 86 in the rest of the world, for the ordinary passport.

Processing time: The Bogotá offices deliver 24 business hours after payment, and gobernación offices and Red CADE points deliver within 48 hours. Delivery abroad runs about 8 business days at many consulates and up to 15 business days at others.

Where to apply: The Cancillería passport offices in Bogotá, an authorised departmental government office (gobernación), or a Red CADE or SuperCADE point; a Colombian consulate if you live abroad.

  2. Enter the passport details and the reference number printed on the Jamaican birth certificate.
  3. Upload one digital passport-size photograph.

Albania Passport Renewal

Albanian biometric passports are not extended, so a renewal means a fresh application. Inside Albania the fee is paid first, at a post office or through an e-coupon, and citizens abroad apply through e-Albania with an embassy appointment.

Steps:

  1. Inside Albania: pay the fee at a post office or buy an e-coupon online.
  2. Present the coupon at a local registry office, where a photograph is taken and fingerprints are digitized.
  3. Collect the passport at the nearest State Police directorate.
  4. Abroad: register on e-Albania, start the application and complete the form, then book an embassy appointment and attend it to pay by card and give fingerprints.

Documents needed: The old passport and the ID card; bring the documents whether they are valid or expired. Applicants in the United States add a civil status certificate. No photograph is needed, because the biometric photo is taken on site.

Fee: 7,500 ALL (lekë) for the standard passport. A faster service costs about 18,000 ALL, and the post notes a conflict between sources on whether that figure is the total or an added charge. The London embassy charges £130.

Processing time: About 3 to 4 weeks inside Albania, about 4 weeks in the United Kingdom, and 4 to 8 weeks in the United States.

Where to apply: Registry offices and State Police directorates inside Albania; e-Albania plus an Albanian embassy or consulate abroad.

FAQs

Can I renew my passport online?

Yes, if you are 25 or older, your 10-year passport expires within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, and you aren’t changing your name. You also can’t travel within 6 weeks.

How much does passport renewal cost?

A routine adult renewal costs $130 for a book, $30 for a card or $160 for both. Expedited service adds $60, and faster return shipping adds $26.87.

How long does passport renewal take?

Routine service takes 4 to 6 weeks and expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks. Mailing time is extra, up to 2 weeks each way according to the State Department.

Can I renew an expired passport?

Yes, by mail if it was issued within the last 15 years when you were 16 or older. Online renewal also works if it expired less than 5 years ago.

Do I need a new photo for renewal?

Yes. Submit one color photo taken in the last 6 months, printed at 2 by 2 inches, with a white background and no glasses. Don’t edit or filter it.

Can I renew my passport if my name changed?

Yes, but not online. Use DS-5504 within 1 year of issue, or DS-82 after that, and include a certified legal document. Online renewal can’t change names.

Can I renew a child’s passport?

No. Children’s passports are valid for 5 years and applicants under 16 must apply for a new passport.

Conclusion

Check three facts before you choose a route: your age, the issue date on your passport and your travel date. If you are 25 or older, your passport expires within a year and you travel in more than 6 weeks, online renewal is open to you. If any of those fail, DS-82 by mail covers most other adults, and the $60 expedite fee brings the 4 to 6 week window down to 2 to 3.
