Passport Renewal Nigeria 2026: ₦100,000 Fee, Portal Steps and Timeline

Passport booklet and blank renewal papers on a desk

Passport renewal Nigeria costs ₦100,000 for a 32-page, 5-year passport and ₦200,000 for a 64-page, 10-year passport for applications made inside Nigeria, since 1 September 2025, according to a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) press release dated 28 August 2025. Renewal costs the same as a new application. Nigerians applying from abroad pay US$150 or US$230, which did not change. Normal processing is about 3 weeks after biometrics according to one guide, but complaints of delays of several months were reported in January 2026.

If you’re researching passport renewal Nigeria, the fee is clear and the timing is not. The NIS raised fees for the second time in a year, the process runs through an online portal and a biometric appointment, and the speed depends on the office and the season. This guide covers the fees and the 2025 increase, the cost per year, the portal steps, documents, timing and delays, renewal abroad, lost passports and the places where the sources disagree. It draws on the NIS press release (28 August 2025), Nairametrics (28 August 2025 and 15 January 2026), Legit.ng (19 January 2026), a YouVerify guide and an Android Pols guide (11 August 2026). The press release is official, and the others are news and consumer sites. The NIS portal could not be opened from our tools, so confirm every fee there before you pay. For how renewal works in the United States, see our passport renewal guide.

How Much Does Passport Renewal Nigeria Cost?

₦100,000 for 5 years and ₦200,000 for 10 years inside Nigeria. The NIS press release and Nairametrics give the same amounts, and Legit.ng and YouVerify agree.

Nairametrics says the previous fees were raised from ₦35,000 and ₦70,000 in September 2024, so the amounts have moved twice in a year. YouVerify says the 32-page fee applies to adults and children aged 0 to 17 alike, while the 64-page passport is for adults only. Legit.ng says renewal costs the same as a fresh application, and Android Pols says the minor and senior discounts no longer apply.

How Much Did the Fees Go Up?

By 100 percent in September 2025, after a 43 percent rise in September 2024. The arithmetic is (100,000 minus 50,000) divided by 50,000 for the 5-year passport and (200,000 minus 100,000) divided by 100,000 for the 10-year passport. The 2024 rise was ₦15,000 on the 5-year fee (50,000 minus 35,000), about 43 percent.

Taken together, the 5-year passport went from ₦35,000 to ₦100,000 in 12 months, an increase of ₦65,000 or about 186 percent (65,000 divided by 35,000). Nairametrics quotes the NIS as saying the increase is meant to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport. Legit.ng dates its article 19 January 2026 and confirms 1 September 2025 as the effective date.

What Do the Fees Work Out to per Year?

₦20,000 per year for either passport inside Nigeria, and US$30 or US$23 per year abroad. The arithmetic is 100,000 divided by 5 and 200,000 divided by 10. Abroad it is 150 divided by 5 and 230 divided by 10. Inside Nigeria the 10-year passport therefore saves nothing per year, but it avoids a second application and a second biometric appointment.

Abroad, the 10-year passport is cheaper. Two 5-year passports at US$150 cost US$300, while one 10-year passport costs US$230, a saving of US$70 or about 23 percent (70 divided by 300). A family of two adults with 10-year passports and two children with 5-year passports pays ₦600,000 in Nigeria (200,000 twice plus 100,000 twice).

How Do You Renew on the NIS Portal?

Log in to the NIS portal, choose renewal, enter your National Identification Number (NIN), pay and attend biometrics. Legit.ng lists nine steps.

  1. Log in to the NIS passport portal or create an account.
  2. Select “Passport Renewal” on your dashboard.
  3. Enter your NIN and complete the online form.
  4. Upload supporting documents and a photo that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
  5. Choose the passport type, validity and office for biometric capture.
  6. Review and submit.
  7. Pay online and print the receipt and application slip.
  8. Book a biometric appointment and attend it.
  9. Wait for processing, then collect the passport when notified.

YouVerify advises starting 6 months before expiry. Android Pols says appointment slots are scarce and advises starting an October renewal by May or June. The Android Pols guide adds that eligible applicants can complete biometrics through the NIS Mobile app but does not say who is eligible.

Which Documents Do You Need?

A NIN, your latest passport, the printed form and receipt, and photos. Legit.ng and Android Pols overlap.

  • A valid NIN, which Android Pols calls mandatory.
  • Your most recently issued passport and a photocopy of its data page.
  • The printed online form, payment receipt and acknowledgement slip.
  • Two recent colour passport photos, with a white background according to Android Pols.
  • A birth certificate or age declaration, according to Android Pols.

The photo count and background come from two blogs, so follow the portal’s photo instructions. The sources do not list extra papers for lost passports. Legit.ng says lost or damaged passports may incur extra administrative fees or penalties, and Android Pols says there is an extra non-refundable charge. Neither gives an amount.

How Long Does Passport Renewal Nigeria Take?

About 3 weeks for a renewal after biometrics according to Legit.ng, with reports of delays of several months. Legit.ng gives about 6 weeks for a new passport, says a minister reportedly mentioned one week for some enrolled applicants and says outside Nigeria applications can take up to 12 weeks according to the Nigerian Consulate in New York. It adds that Nigerians visiting from abroad can use a fast-track system at major airports for renewal in about 2 weeks, with no further detail.

Nairametrics reported on 15 January 2026 that applicants had faced delays in issuance and collection. Journalist Fisayo Soyombo said he waited over six months for a renewal after biometrics in July 2025, and one applicant reported a four-month wait after declining to pay for “express” processing at the Abuja office. The NIS attributed some delays to incomplete applications or technical problems and added a “PRODUCED” status to its tracker after finding hundreds of passports that were produced but never collected.

These accounts contradict the 3-week figure. Plan for a longer wait and track your application online. A traveler with a passport that expires in five months should not rely on three weeks.

What Does the Tracker Show?

Since January 2026 it has a “PRODUCED” status for passports that are ready for collection or courier delivery. Nairametrics reports that the NIS added the status after finding hundreds of passports that were produced but never collected. The change separates production delays from passports that are ready but not yet picked up. If your tracker shows the older statuses for many weeks, ask the processing office rather than an agent. Legit.ng says you collect the passport when you are notified, and the Android Pols guide says you hand in the old passport for cancellation at collection.

What Applies to Minors and Seniors?

The same fee as everyone else. Android Pols says the minor and senior discounts no longer apply, although it still lists separate senior and minor requirements without noting any fee difference. YouVerify gives the ₦100,000 fee for children aged 0 to 17 on the 32-page passport. The sources do not list the extra documents for minors, so check the portal before you book a biometric slot.

Is There an Official Express Service?

Not at a published price. Android Pols says the NIS publishes no official express or same-day fee and warns against third parties who guarantee same-day service for a payment. Nairametrics reports allegations that officers leave statuses unupdated to push applicants toward extra payments, and says the NIS has not directly responded. Pay only through the portal and keep the receipt.

How Does Renewal Work Abroad?

Pay US$150 or US$230 and apply through the diaspora route. The NIS release says Nigerians abroad pay the same amounts as before. Android Pols says online renewal for Nigerians abroad covers Canada, the UK, the US and Italy, with optional home delivery, and Legit.ng says processing outside Nigeria can take up to 12 weeks. Neither page says whether the dollar fee applies to every abroad route, including the airport fast-track, so ask the nearest embassy or consulate.

Which Route Fits Which Applicant?

Use the portal and a biometric office in Nigeria, and the diaspora route abroad. The table lines up the options.

How Reliable Are the Sources?

The fees are official and consistent, and the timing figures are not. The NIS press release, Nairametrics, Legit.ng and YouVerify give the same naira amounts. The conflicts are the processing time (3 weeks against months of reported delay), the validity of the standard passport and the 64-page fee in Legit.ng’s own text.

YouVerify says in one section that the standard passport has a lifespan of ten years, which conflicts with its tables that show 5 years for 32 pages. Legit.ng’s text says a 64-page, 5-year passport costs ₦100,000, which conflicts with its table. YouVerify says the government approved the increase and ties the rise to September 2024, which conflicts with the 2025 date in the NIS release. The press release is the safest source on fees.

What Should You Check Before You File?

Confirm the fee, your NIN and your timeline. Three quick checks save the most time.

  1. Check the fee on the NIS portal, since the amounts changed in September 2024 and September 2025.
  2. Confirm that your NIN is valid before you start.
  3. Start at least 6 months before expiry and allow for delays.

A parent renewing a child’s passport should use the 32-page, ₦100,000 option and bring the documents the portal requests for minors.

Which Mistakes Delay Passport Renewal Nigeria?

Missing a NIN and trusting unofficial agents cause most delays. Check each point first.

  • Applying without a NIN.
  • Paying a middleman who promises same-day service.
  • Using a pre-September 2025 fee table.
  • Waiting until the last weeks before expiry.
  • Forgetting to bring the old passport to biometrics.
  • Using photos that do not meet the rules.
  • Assuming the diaspora fee applies to every abroad route.
  • Expecting a discount for seniors or minors.
